Where it came from
Vividred Operation originated as an original anime television series produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Kazuya Takamura, which premiered in early 2013. The project was conceived as a collaboration between Aniplex, ASCII Media Works, and Movic, designed to showcase a high-energy magical girl aesthetic combined with mechanical transformation elements. It was part of a broader multimedia push during the early 2010s to revitalize the genre by integrating vibrant character designs by Redjuice with heavy reliance on stylized action sequences.
The series received a manga adaptation authored by Team Vivid, which sought to parallel the narrative arc of the anime while emphasizing the camaraderie and interpersonal bonds of the core cast. Upon release, the work was noted by critics for its ambitious visual style and its focus on themes of friendship and sacrifice, though its reception was mixed among viewers who debated the balance between the lighthearted slice-of-life sequences and the more serious science-fiction plot developments.
