Where it came from
Watashi no Oyome-kun, illustrated and written by Natsumi Shiba, began its serialization in the Japanese josei manga magazine Kiss in 2019. The series emerged during a period of shifting gender norms in Japanese media, centering on the domestic dynamics between a career-focused woman and her younger, house-proud male colleague who aspires to be a devoted homemaker. Shiba designed the narrative to explore themes of non-traditional caregiving roles while maintaining the lighthearted pacing characteristic of modern workplace romantic comedies.
The work gained significant traction for its subversion of classic domestic tropes, leading to a successful live-action television adaptation in 2023. Critics and readers have noted that Shiba’s clean, expressive line work and focus on the mundane joys of housekeeping resonate with audiences looking for comfort-focused stories. The manga remains recognized for its gentle humor and its contribution to the subgenre of domestic-focused romance within the josei demographic.
