World Embryo

World Embryo was serialized in the seinen magazine Young King OURs starting in 2005, created by the manga artist Daisuke Moriyama. Following the conclusion of his popular series Chrono Crusade, Moriyama sought to explore a darker, more modern science fiction landscape. The narrative centers on a young man named Amami Riku who becomes embroiled in a struggle against mysterious, alien-like organisms known as 'Jidanbo' that occupy human bodies, reflecting a thematic shift toward urban fantasy and existential horror.

Moriyama’s visual style for the series is characterized by high-contrast ink work and intricate, often unsettling creature designs that underscore the series' tension. The architectural and environmental designs emphasize a sense of encroaching decay in a contemporary setting, aiming to ground the supernatural elements within a realistic Japan. Upon its release, the series was noted for its departure from the tone of his earlier works, gaining appreciation from readers for its dense lore and the meticulous detail poured into its action sequences.
