Where it came from
Yakouun no Sarissa is a historical fantasy manga series written by Matsuda Miki. It debuted in 2015, serialized within the pages of Monthly Comic Zenon. The narrative is set against the backdrop of ancient Macedonia, reimagining the life of Alexander the Great through the perspective of his tactical advisor and the titular sarissa-wielding warriors. The work aims to blend rigorous historical research with high-stakes political drama, focusing on the logistical and psychological burdens of leading a massive empire.
The series is noted for its detailed character designs and elaborate battle sequences, which reflect a meticulous approach to the period's military architecture. Matsuda Miki’s illustration style emphasizes the weight and scale of the Macedonian phalanx, using stark ink work to distinguish between the protagonist's strategic brilliance and the brutal reality of the battlefield. It has been well-regarded by readers for providing a more grounded, analytical take on a historical figure frequently depicted through pure mythic lens.
