Yaksha

Yaksha is a dark fantasy manhwa series written and illustrated by Park Shin, emerging during a period when the South Korean manhwa industry was increasingly exploring gritty, supernatural themes for an older adolescent and young adult demographic. The series draws upon traditional mythology while filtering it through a modern, stylized aesthetic common in early 2000s Korean comics, focusing on atmospheric tension and character-driven conflict.

The design of the series reflects Park Shin’s intent to blend action-oriented sequences with a haunting, gothic tone. By leaning into the concept of the Yaksha—beings from Buddhist and Hindu mythology often depicted as fierce or malevolent—the work sought to subvert standard hero tropes. Upon its release, it gained a dedicated following among manhwa readers who appreciated its departure from typical light-hearted adventure stories, marking it as a notable entry in the darker subgenre of the era.
