Where it came from
YAT Untroubled! Space Tours, or YAT Anshin! Uchu Ryoko, originated as an anime series that aired in Japan throughout the late 1990s. The associated manga adaptation, featuring the distinctive work of Shinji Nishikawa, expanded on the show's comedic take on space travel, where an underfunded agency struggles to provide affordable galactic tours to eccentric tourists. Nishikawa, better known for his significant contributions to the Godzilla franchise designs, brought a refined, clean aesthetic to this lighthearted science fiction romp, emphasizing expressive character silhouettes and playful, retro-futuristic technology.
The series and its print iterations were received as a quintessential example of late 90s family-oriented comedy, leaning into the optimism of space exploration tropes common to the era. Nishikawa’s art captured the frantic, slapstick energy of the source material, ensuring the manga felt like a cohesive expansion of the broadcast experience. While the franchise remains a niche cult classic today, it stands as a testament to the period's interest in space-themed workplace humor and the creative versatility of artists working within the tokusatsu and anime spheres.
