Yatterman (Yoshihiko Takemura)

Yoshihiko Takemura's manga adaptation of Yatterman was produced during the late 1970s, coinciding with the immense popularity of the Tatsunoko Production anime series of the same name. As part of a wave of media tie-ins that defined the era, Takemura was tasked with translating the frantic, comedic, and action-oriented energy of the animated show into a static, printed format. This work served as a bridge for younger audiences to engage with the franchise beyond the television broadcast, capturing the iconic dynamic between the heroic Yatterman duo and the recurring Dorombo gang.

The design of the manga adheres to the established visual language of Tatsunoko's character designs, emphasizing exaggerated expressions and the distinct, retro-futuristic aesthetic of the mechanical Yatter-mechs. Takemura’s illustration style focused on readability and humor, prioritizing the slapstick nature of the villains' failures and the episodic, toy-focused structure that fueled the series' commercial success. It remains a notable artifact of late-Showa era children's literature, reflecting how manga artists were utilized to reinforce the branding of multimedia franchises of the time.
