Where it came from
Your Reason for Living, known in Japanese as 'Kimi ni shika kikoenai', is a collection of short stories written by the acclaimed Japanese author Otsuichi. Released in the early 2000s, the work emerged during a period when Otsuichi was gaining significant recognition for his unique ability to blend delicate, emotional prose with elements of psychological thriller and subtle supernatural dread. The collection is characterized by its quiet, introspective tone, focusing on themes of isolation, loneliness, and the invisible connections between alienated individuals.
The stories within this volume are highly regarded for their minimalist yet evocative storytelling style. Otsuichi, who gained notoriety for his debut at a very young age, employed a distinctive narrative voice that prioritizes the inner landscapes of his protagonists over complex plot mechanics. Upon its publication, the collection was well-received by fans of contemporary Japanese literature and light novels alike, cementing Otsuichi's reputation as a master of the 'lonely' aesthetic and eventually inspiring a cinematic adaptation that further elevated the source material's profile.
