Where it came from
Zero Tester: Protect the Earth! originated as a tie-in manga serialization based on the 1973 science fiction anime series Zero Tester. Produced by Tohoku Shinsha and directed by Ryosuke Takahashi, the series was designed to compete with the burgeoning popularity of super robot programs of the era. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Kondo Masato, was developed to expand the reach of the show's narrative, which follows a team of specialized pilots tasked with defending the planet from extraterrestrial threats.
The design of the manga reflects the aesthetic trends of early 1970s shonen storytelling, characterized by dynamic action sequences and a heavy emphasis on futuristic technology. Kondo Masato’s illustration style aimed to capture the intensity of the animated series while utilizing the static medium of print to highlight the intricate mechanical details of the 'Zero Tester' ships. It was received as a standard promotional companion piece, serving as a primary entry point for young readers to engage with the franchise's overarching lore.
