Where it came from
Zipangu Night is a representative work by Hino Hideshi, a legendary figure in Japanese horror manga. Emerging from the mid-to-late 20th-century wave of avant-garde alternative comics, Hino’s work often explores the grotesque and the macabre, using a distinctive, raw illustrative style to mirror the anxieties of post-war Japanese society. This collection reflects his career-long fascination with urban legends and the uncanny.
Hino’s design philosophy consistently centers on the juxtaposition of childlike, simplified character archetypes with deeply unsettling, visceral horror elements. In Zipangu Night, he employs this technique to build atmospheric narratives that feel like folklore. The work was received as a cult classic, celebrated by enthusiasts of underground manga for its unique ability to evoke dread through deceptively rudimentary visuals.
