Where it came from
The Bug Boy was created by the renowned horror manga artist Hino Hideshi and originally published in the early 1970s. Hino is widely celebrated for his unique, grotesque, and often empathetic approach to the horror genre, which emerged from his desire to explore the fears and vulnerabilities of youth through a surreal, visceral lens.
The narrative follows a young boy named Sanpei who is transformed into an insect-like creature after being bitten by a strange bug, leading to his alienation and eventual exile from his family. Hino utilized his signature scratchy, claustrophobic art style to evoke a sense of profound isolation and tragedy, creating a work that is frequently cited as a seminal piece of dark, emotive Japanese horror manga.
