Where it came from
Thermae Romae was serialized in Monthly Comic Beam starting in 2008, created by mangaka Mari Yamazaki. The series emerged from Yamazaki's deep-seated fascination with the Roman Empire and her desire to bridge the cultural gap between ancient Roman engineering and modern Japanese bathing customs. The narrative follows Lucius Modestus, a Roman architect who travels through time to present-day Japan to discover inspiration for his public baths.
The manga was lauded for its comedic premise and meticulous historical research, earning both the Manga Taisho award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Yamazaki's art style balances clean, classical Roman architectural lines with expressive, character-driven caricatures, reflecting a thoughtful blend of historical reverence and lighthearted satire that resonated broadly with audiences interested in cultural exchange.
