Thermae Romae

Thermae Romae was created by Mari Yamazaki and serialized in Comic Beam beginning in 2008. The series originated from Yamazaki's desire to explore the deep-seated cultural obsession with bathing shared by both the Japanese and Roman civilizations. By juxtaposing the technological ingenuity of Ancient Rome with the hyper-modern sensibilities of contemporary Japan, the narrative serves as both a historical comedy and an anthropological reflection on communal hygiene and cultural identity.

The manga is characterized by Yamazaki’s meticulous research and distinctively classical art style, which contrasts sharply with typical shonen or seinen aesthetics of the era.
