Where it came from
The ST22-001 Ace & Newgate leader card was released as part of the One Piece Card Game Starter Deck 22, designed to introduce players to the themes of the Whitebeard Pirates. It was created by Bandai to provide a strategic foundation for competitive play, specifically focusing on the powerful synergy between Portgas D. Ace and his captain, Edward Newgate. The card draws heavily from the Marineford Arc, reflecting the pivotal relationship between the two characters and their central role in the narrative climax of the summit war.
The design of the card emphasizes the artistic aesthetic established by the One Piece Trading Card Game, utilizing high-quality illustrations that capture the commanding presence of both figures. By pairing these two prominent characters on a single leader card, the design team aimed to evoke the emotional weight of their alliance. Upon its release, the deck was well-received by players for its thematic focus and its specific mechanics, which encouraged a playstyle centered on tactical endurance and character-driven support.
