The Carmel card originated as part of the E90-1 American Caramel Company set, a seminal series of baseball cards produced between 1909 and 1911. Distributed as a promotional incentive packaged with individual pieces of caramel candy, these cards were intended to appeal to the burgeoning fan base of early 20th-century baseball. At the time, such cards were often collected by children and traded in schoolyards, serving as one of the primary methods for fans to secure portraits of their athletic idols during the pre-radio and television era.

The design of the E90-1 set is characterized by its vibrant color lithography, which departed from the more muted or black-and-white photography common in other tobacco or candy issues of the period. The illustrations are credited to various artists employed by the printing firms contracted by American Caramel, who sought to capture a heroic, stylized essence of the players.
