Gordon is one of the original characters from the Thomas & Friends franchise, based on The Railway Series books written by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Introduced in the 1946 debut volume, The Three Railway Engines, Gordon was designed as a powerful 'Big Engine' to represent the pride and authority of the main line. His character was inspired by the LNER Gresley Pacific locomotives, capturing the aesthetic of early 20th-century British steam engineering through Awdry's desire to give engines distinct, relatable personalities.
