Jack

The Jack playing card is a central element of the standard 52-card French-suited deck, originating from the development of European card games in the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally known as the 'knave,' the card represented a young man or a knight in waiting, acting as the lowest of the three face cards. The shift in terminology to 'Jack' occurred in the mid-19th century, primarily to prevent confusion with the King when using the letter 'K' for index marking.

The visual design of the Jack, particularly the 'standard' pattern used in English and American decks, evolved from the Rouennais style of playing cards. These designs became highly stylized over time, utilizing flat, geometric shapes and non-representative color palettes to ensure the cards remained legible regardless of how they were oriented. While various regional variations exist, the modern Jack retains the historical aesthetic of courtly attire, reflecting the aristocratic roots of the deck’s traditional iconography.
