Where it came from
The Oars card (OP15-080) from the Adventure on Kami's Island set was designed as part of a series intended to flesh out the diverse cast of supporting characters within the expansion. It reflects the thematic focus of the set, which highlights survival mechanics and tactical navigation across the island's unique terrain. The artwork captures the character in a moment of readiness, prioritizing a balance between functional design and the vibrant, stylized aesthetic common to the trading card series.
Upon its release, the card was integrated into play as a utility character, valued for its specific synergy with water-type movement mechanics. While it did not receive widespread critical acclaim as a rare chase card, it gained a reputation among competitive players for its reliable performance in board-control decks. The design process focused on utility and thematic consistency, ensuring that Oars felt like a natural inhabitant of Kami’s Island while providing a modest, dependable presence in the game’s meta.
