Where it came from
The Portgas D. Ace leader card, numbered ST13-002, was released as a centerpiece of the One Piece Card Game's second anniversary celebrations. Designed to commemorate the series' milestone, the card features artwork depicting the beloved character in his iconic pose, reflecting the high-stakes, emotional narrative of the Marineford arc. Its production was intended to serve as a premium centerpiece for competitive players, integrating into the ST13 starter deck meta while offering a sought-after aesthetic for collectors.
The design team focused on honoring the legacy of Ace within the One Piece universe, employing a vibrant, high-contrast illustration style typical of the Bandai promotional releases. Upon its release, the card was received with significant enthusiasm by the competitive community, who valued its specific leader abilities, and by collectors drawn to its limited-distribution nature. It stands as a representative example of the modern collectible card game strategy, where functional power meets curated, thematic design.
