Where it came from
The Portgas D. Ace character card (ST15-005) was released in 2024 as part of the ST-15 Starter Deck: Edward Newgate for the One Piece Card Game. This deck was designed to honor the legacy of the Whitebeard Pirates, focusing on the familial bond between Edward Newgate and his subordinates. By including Ace in this specialized set, Bandai aimed to reinforce the narrative cohesion of the Marineford arc, providing players with cards that emphasize character synergy and theme-based strategic play.
The design of the card reflects the high-contrast, dynamic art style synonymous with the series' long-standing aesthetic. It was illustrated to capture Ace's signature fiery temperament and his pivotal role as a commander within the Whitebeard crew. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its utility in the meta-game and by fans of the series for its evocative depiction of a core protagonist, effectively serving as both a functional game piece and a collectible tribute to one of the most significant characters in the One Piece franchise.
