Provenance

Where it came from

Released in May 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion, this card represents the final set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Pokémon Trading Card Game before the license transitioned to Nintendo. As the third and final installment of the E-Card series, Skyridge introduced unique dot-code strips on the card borders, which allowed players to scan the cards into a Game Boy Advance e-Reader peripheral to unlock mini-games and additional data, marking a brief period of experimental integration between physical cards and digital console hardware.

The artwork for this particular Abra was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and conceptual artist for the Pokémon franchise. Eschewing the more elaborate 3D-style illustrations found on many rare cards in the set, Sugimori utilized a classic, clean watercolor aesthetic that emphasizes the simple, minimalist design of the original Generation I Pokémon. Within the competitive landscape of the time, the card was a standard utility piece, prized more for its accessibility to players than its scarcity, though the set itself has since gained significant historical importance due to the eventual cessation of Wizards of the Coast's involvement in the game.
