Where it came from
The Aerodactyl ex card was released as part of the EX Sandstorm expansion in September 2003, marking the second major set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's EX era. This era introduced the 'ex' mechanic, which featured Pokémon with significantly higher HP and more powerful attacks than their standard counterparts, often at the cost of giving up two prize cards upon being knocked out. The set was designed to shift the competitive landscape toward more aggressive gameplay and higher-risk, high-reward strategies.
The card was illustrated by Hikaru Koike, who was a frequent contributor to the series during this period. Koike’s design for Aerodactyl ex emphasizes the creature's prehistoric, fossil-like aesthetic, utilizing the characteristic silver-bordered EX card frame that defined the era. The artwork was well-received by players for its dynamic pose and the holographic pattern that helped distinguish the rarity of the card within the Sandstorm collection.
