What it does
Play Mysterious Fossil as if it were a Basic Pokémon. While in play, Mysterious Fossil counts as a Colorless Pokémon (instead of a Trainer card). Mysterious Fossil has no attacks of its own, can't retreat, and can't be affected by any Special Conditions. If Mysterious is Knocked Out, it doesn't count as a Knocked Out Pokémon. (Discard it anyway.) At any time during your turn before your attack, you may discard Mysterious Fossil from play.

Where it came from
The Mysterious Fossil card was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's EX Sandstorm expansion in 2003. This set served as the second installment in the EX Series, which introduced new mechanics and updated art styles following the transition of the game's licensing to The Pokémon Company International. The item was designed to facilitate the evolution mechanic for Fossil-type Pokémon, allowing players to bring prehistoric creatures onto the field in a way that mimicked the archeological discoveries found in the core video games.
The illustration for this card was created by artist Mitsuhiro Arita, a veteran of the franchise whose work has defined the visual identity of the card game since its inception. Arita utilized a clean, clinical aesthetic to depict the fossilized remains, focusing on a sense of mystery and scientific discovery. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in competitive play due to its unique status as a Trainer card that functioned as a Basic Pokémon, making it a staple for any player building a deck centered on Fossil-type strategies.
