Where it came from
Altaria ex (232/182) was released in late 2023 as part of the Paradox Rift expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set introduced the Ancient and Future mechanics, drawing inspiration from the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet video games. Within the meta-game of the TCG, the Altaria ex card represents a return to the long-standing Dragon-type tradition, utilizing the 'Crystalline Breath' ability to provide defensive utility, reflecting the creature's lore as a protective, bird-like dragon.
The card features an illustration by artist Souichirou Gunjima, who is known for his distinct, clean digital style within the Pokémon TCG. The design leans into the 'Ultra Rare' aesthetic by incorporating a specialized foil etching and a full-art treatment that highlights the Pokémon's graceful, cloud-like wings. Upon its release, collectors specifically sought out this card for its dual status as a high-rarity chase card and a competitive tool, cementing its place in the modern Scarlet and Violet era of the hobby.
