Where it came from
Altaria ex (253/182) was released in late 2023 as part of the Paradox Rift expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. As a Special Illustration Rare, this card was designed to offer a more artistic, narrative-driven aesthetic compared to standard holofoil cards, focusing on an immersive scene rather than a static pose. It captures the ethereal, cloud-like nature of the Dragon-type Pokémon within the high-fidelity art style that characterizes the Scarlet & Violet era's pursuit of premium, collector-focused rarities.
The illustration was crafted by artist Jerky, who opted for a serene, atmospheric composition that emphasizes the creature's elegant silhouette against a soft, painterly background. The card is mechanically significant for its inclusion of the 'ex' mechanic, which balances high health and powerful attacks with the drawback of yielding two prize cards upon being knocked out. Upon release, it was well-received by players and collectors alike for its combination of strategic utility and the highly sought-after full-art aesthetic.
