Where it came from
The Ampharos ex card, numbered 016/215 in the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos series, was released in 2023 as part of the promotional support for the Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It was distributed primarily through the Ampharos ex Battle Deck, providing players with a ready-to-play strategy featuring the mascot Pokémon. This release reflected the game's ongoing transition to the ex mechanic, which emphasizes high-HP, high-damage Pokémon that grant multiple prize cards when knocked out.
The card features artwork by 5ban Graphics, a studio frequently commissioned by The Pokémon Company for digital illustration work. The design captures Ampharos in a dynamic, high-contrast style characteristic of the modern ex-card aesthetic, utilizing metallic foil treatments to accentuate the electric typing. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its accessibility as a core component of a pre-constructed deck, serving as an approachable entry point for players navigating the new ruleset of the Scarlet & Violet series.
