Where it came from
Ampharos-EX (87/98) was released in 2015 as part of the Ancient Origins expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set introduced the concept of Ancient Traits, which were special abilities that provided passive advantages to Pokémon during gameplay. As an EX card, Ampharos-EX represents a specialized, high-health version of the Pokémon designed for the more aggressive and competitive playstyle favored during the XY series era of the game.
The card features an illustration by Eske Yoshinob, who utilized a dynamic and high-contrast aesthetic to emphasize the electrical nature of the character. The design follows the standard EX template of the time, characterized by bold, foil-etched borders and a full-body artwork style that set these cards apart from standard holographic releases. It was received by the player base as a sturdy, utility-focused card, valued primarily for its Mega Evolving potential and its ability to inflict status conditions on opponents.
