Provenance

Where it came from

The Articuno card was released in 1999 as part of the Fossil expansion, the third set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Following the immense success of the Base Set and Jungle, the Fossil set was designed to introduce the legendary birds and prehistoric Pokémon featured in the original generation of games. This specific card represents one of the most iconic appearances of the legendary ice-type bird in the game's early history.

The illustration was created by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the history of the Pokémon TCG. Arita opted for a majestic, expansive pose for the bird, utilizing a vibrant holographic foil treatment that became a hallmark of the set. The card was well-received by players and collectors alike, becoming a staple of water-type decks and an enduring favorite due to the prominence of the legendary trio in Pokémon lore.
