Where it came from
Released in May 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion, the Articuno card (H3/144) represents one of the final sets produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Skyridge is often cited by collectors as a landmark set, noted for its inclusion of the innovative Crystal Pokémon mechanic and its integration with the Game Boy Advance title Pokémon Crystal. The set serves as a historical capstone to the early era of the English-language card game before the license transitioned to The Pokémon Company International.
The card features artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi, who utilized a distinct, minimalist digital art style that defined several of the holographic cards in the E-Card series. His design choice for this Articuno focuses on a clean, sharp aesthetic that highlights the Pokémon's icy motif against a stark background. At the time of its release, the card was well-received for its crisp graphical presentation, though its utility in competitive play was often overshadowed by other high-tier Water-type attackers in the format.
