Blaine's Charmander

Blaine's Charmander was released as part of the Gym Heroes expansion in the year 2000, a set designed to translate the Gym Leader concept from the original Pokémon video games into the Trading Card Game. This specific card represents the fire-type partner of the Cinnabar Island Gym Leader, Blaine. The expansion was notable for focusing on the personalized rosters of iconic leaders, shifting the aesthetic away from general species cards toward thematic decks that highlighted character-specific training styles.

The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator and art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s approach for the Gym Heroes series was to capture a sense of character ownership, often depicting the Pokémon in active poses that reflected the personality of their respective trainers. As a common card, it served as a foundational building block for fire-themed decks of the era, and it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors interested in the evolution of early TCG set design.
