Blaine's Dodrio

Blaine's Dodrio was released in the year 2000 as part of the Gym Challenge expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was designed to reflect the specialized team compositions of the Gym Leaders from the Kanto region, specifically focusing on the trainers featured in the latter half of the game's challenge circuit. As the leader of the Cinnabar Island Gym, Blaine was characterized by his reliance on Fire-type Pokémon, making the inclusion of Dodrio—a Normal-type bird—a distinct departure that highlighted the diverse auxiliary strategies employed by high-level trainers in the game's narrative.

The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator and creative designer behind the original Pokémon roster. Sugimori’s style for the Gym Challenge set emphasized the thematic connection between trainer and Pokémon, often depicting the creatures in dynamic poses that mirrored the personalities of their respective owners. While Blaine's Dodrio was classified as an uncommon card, it became a notable piece for collectors interested in the Gym Leader subset, serving as a functional utility card that captured the specific aesthetic shift of the late nineties Wizards of the Coast era.
