Brock's Lickitung

Brock's Lickitung was released as part of the Gym Heroes expansion in the year 2000, which served as the first set in the Pokémon Trading Card Game's 'Gym' series. Developed to align the card game with the anime's narrative, this series featured cards associated with specific Gym Leaders, allowing players to incorporate the personality and signature Pokémon of characters like Brock into their decks. The set sought to bridge the gap between the competitive trading card game and the familiar world of the Kanto region's gym challenge.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary designer and lead character artist for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for this series often emphasized the specific connection between the trainer and their Pokémon, capturing Lickitung in a characteristic pose that highlights its unique physiology. Upon release, the card was well-received by collectors who appreciated the thematic shift toward character-focused decks, cementing its place as a recognizable staple of the early Gym Heroes collection.
