Brock's Mankey

Brock's Mankey was released in the Gym Heroes expansion, which launched in the West in the year 2000. This set was unique because it shifted the focus of the Pokémon Trading Card Game toward the specific signature creatures belonging to the Gym Leaders from the original Game Boy games. The set was designed to capture the personality of the characters from the anime and video games, bringing a thematic narrative element to the card game that had previously been focused primarily on creature evolution and type advantages.

The card artwork was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary designer and art director for the Pokémon franchise. In keeping with the aesthetic of the Gym Heroes set, the illustration aims to emphasize the connection between the Gym Leader and their Pokémon, portraying Mankey in a pose that reflects its signature aggressive behavior under Brock's training. As a common card, it was widely accessible to players at the time and served as a foundational piece for building decks centered around the Earth Badge gym, focusing on the Fighting-type mechanics that define Brock's playstyle.
