Provenance

Where it came from

The Cacturne card, numbered 2/100, was released in the EX Sandstorm expansion in 2003. This set was the second installment of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's EX era, which transitioned the game's mechanics to feature Pokémon-ex with higher hit points and powerful attacks. As a grass-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation of the video games, Cacturne was depicted in this holo-rare iteration with a focus on its nocturnal, desert-dwelling aesthetic.

The illustration was crafted by artist Naoyo Kimura, who contributed numerous pieces to the Pokémon TCG throughout the early 2000s. Kimura aimed to emphasize the Pokémon's eerie, cactus-like features, utilizing the holographic foil treatment to capture the stark, arid environment of the Hoenn region. Upon release, the set was well-regarded for its thematic consistency, and this card remains a representative example of the distinct art style that defined the mid-generation era of the game.
