Lore

Why it matters

Part of the XY Black Star Promo set, this Charizard-EX card features artwork that emphasizes the Pokémon’s classic fire-type identity. Because it was released as a promotional item rather than through standard booster packs, it remains a distinct piece for those documenting the evolution of Charizard’s depictions throughout the XY era.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Charizard-EX promo card, numbered XY29, was released in 2014 as part of the XY Black Star Promos series. It was specifically distributed within the Charizard-EX Box, a retail product designed to capitalize on the popularity of the XY expansion era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This period marked a shift toward high-powered EX cards, which featured distinct holographic foil patterns and significantly higher hit points than standard cards.

The card’s artwork features a dynamic illustration by Eske Yoshinob, who was a frequent contributor to the franchise during the XY era. Yoshinob’s aesthetic often emphasized dramatic lighting and aggressive poses, and for this specific iteration, the goal was to showcase Charizard in an imposing, active combat stance. The card became widely recognized among collectors due to Charizard's enduring status as a flagship Pokémon, making this promo a staple entry in early modern-era collections.
