Provenance

Where it came from

The Clefairy Doll card originated in the inaugural Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released by Wizards of the Coast in North America in 1999. It served as a functional item card within the game, designed to mimic the in-game mechanics of the handheld video games where the doll acts as a decoy to allow the player to escape battle. This design choice was intended to bring tactical variety to the card game, allowing players to utilize a non-Pokémon card to stall their opponent.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Keiji Kinebuchi, who utilized a distinct, heavily textured artistic style that became a hallmark of the early Japanese card releases. His work on the Base Set helped establish the visual language of the game for Western audiences. While not a powerhouse card in competitive play, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors due to its association with the foundational aesthetic of the 1990s Pokémon phenomenon.
