What it does
Choose 1 of your own Pokémon in play and a Stage of Evolution. Discard all Evolution cards of that Stage or higher attached to that Pokémon. That Pokémon is no longer Asleep, Confused, Paralyzed, Poisoned, or anything else that might be the result of an attack (just as if you had evolved it).

Where it came from
The Devolution Spray card was released in 1999 as part of the original Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which was published by Wizards of the Coast following the immense success of the franchise in Japan. Designed as a Trainer card, it provided a tactical utility that allowed a player to return their evolved Pokémon to their hand, effectively healing damage or allowing the player to reuse powerful 'Enter the Battlefield' style abilities. This mechanic was a core component of the early competitive meta, emphasizing the strategic resource management that defined the game’s debut.
The card’s visual identity aligns with the classic aesthetic of the first generation of Pokémon cards, featuring simple, clean graphic design that prioritizes readability and function. While the specific illustrator of this card was part of the broader artistic collective employed by Creatures Inc. to establish the initial visual language of the game, the card is widely recognized for its minimalist layout. It was well-received by early players for its disruptive potential, becoming a staple in many competitive decks throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
