Where it came from
The Cloyster card, numbered 20/112, was released in the Pokémon Trading Card Game FireRed & LeafGreen expansion in 2004. This set served as a bridge for players, reimagining the original Generation I Pokémon within the then-current mechanics of the e-Reader era. The design aesthetic reflects the high-contrast, bold style prevalent in the early 2000s TCG era, emphasizing the creature's formidable defensive shell and icy attributes to distinguish its Water-type classification.
The artwork for this specific card was produced by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator and art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori sought to capture the intimidating, impenetrable nature of the Shellder evolution, often utilizing a stark, clean pose that echoed his original character designs for the Red and Green Game Boy titles. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard, reliable rare for water-focused decks, prized by players for its utility in gameplay and by fans of the classic Kanto roster.
