Where it came from
Cloyster (32/62) was released in 1999 as part of the Fossil expansion, the third set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Following the success of the Base Set and Jungle, the Fossil set was designed to introduce the remaining Generation I Pokémon that had not yet appeared in card form, focusing on the mysterious prehistoric creatures found in the Kanto region's lore.
The card features artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi, a prominent early contributor to the series. His style in this era often employed a distinct, digitally rendered aesthetic that emphasized the metallic or rocky textures of Pokémon. Cloyster was received by players as a solid defensive option for Water-type decks, valued for its 'Shell Shocker' attack which provided a reliable defensive utility during the early, formative years of the game's competitive scene.
