Where it came from
Dark Pupitar was released in the Team Rocket Returns expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in North America in late 2004. This set served as a thematic sequel to the original Team Rocket expansion, focusing on the villainous organization and introducing the 'Dark' and 'Rocket's' Pokémon mechanics that emphasized aggressive play styles. The set was produced by The Pokémon Company during the transition period of the Wizards of the Coast to Nintendo-led card production.
The card features artwork by Naoyo Kimura, who chose a dynamic, intense illustration style characteristic of the set's darker aesthetic. Kimura’s work on this card depicts the Pokémon in a menacing posture consistent with the Team Rocket narrative, where Pokémon were often portrayed as toughened or corrupted. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard uncommon utility piece, valued by players for its synergy within the dark-type archetype and its role in expanding the evolution chain for the set's centerpiece Pokémon.
