Provenance

Where it came from

Dark Pupitar was released in the Team Rocket Returns expansion, which launched in the West in late 2004. This set served as a thematic sequel to the original 2000 Team Rocket set, shifting focus toward the nefarious schemes of the villainous organization while introducing the 'Dark' sub-type as a permanent game mechanic. The set was designed to capture a grittier aesthetic than the standard base sets, featuring dark-themed evolutions that prioritized aggressive playstyles and utility.

The artwork for this card was provided by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the Pokémon Trading Card Game's history. Arita often employed a moody, atmospheric style for the Team Rocket expansion, focusing on Pupitar's rigid, shell-like anatomy and its menacing posture. The card was well-received by players of the era for its ability to evolve into Dark Tyranitar, a powerhouse card that defined the meta-game during the Team Rocket Returns tournament circuit.
