Where it came from
Dark Tyranitar 20/109 was released as part of the Team Rocket Returns expansion in late 2004, a set that revisited the villainous themes of the original Team Rocket series. Following the shift in ownership of the Pokémon Trading Card Game license to The Pokémon Company, this expansion introduced dual-type Pokémon and dark evolutions that mechanically reflected the corrupting influence of the team. The card was designed to highlight the menacing aesthetic of the Dark Pokémon subset, which prioritized aggressive offensive moves over defensive utility.
The artwork for this specific card was executed by illustrator Kouki Saitou, who is well-regarded for his dynamic and textured approach to character rendering. In this depiction, Tyranitar is captured in an imposing stance, utilizing the darker, shadowy color palette characteristic of the set to emphasize its threatening presence. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy with Dark-type mechanics, becoming a staple in competitive decks of the era that sought to capitalize on high-damage output and efficient energy costs.
