Dark Ampharos

Dark Ampharos was released in 2004 as part of the Team Rocket Returns expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set marked a thematic return to the villainous Team Rocket organization, featuring cards with the 'Dark' prefix that reflected a more aggressive or corrupted variant of the standard Pokémon. The mechanics of the set emphasized cards with higher damage outputs and strategic disruption, capturing the gritty aesthetic associated with the Team Rocket narrative in the broader franchise.

The card features an illustration by Kouki Saitou, who became a prominent artist within the TCG during the mid-2000s. Saitou’s design for Dark Ampharos leans into the set's darker motif, utilizing sharp lines and dramatic lighting to portray the electric-type Pokémon in a more menacing light than its standard iterations. Upon its debut, the card was well-regarded by competitive players for its 'Conductivity' Poké-Body, which allowed for efficient energy management, solidifying its place as a staple of the Team Rocket Returns meta-game.
