Where it came from
Defender was released in the year 2000 as part of the Pokémon Base Set 2 expansion. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a follow-up to the original Base Set and Jungle expansion, created primarily to maintain product availability for players after the initial run of sets became difficult to source in the hobby market. Base Set 2 is distinct for its re-use of original card art alongside a specific set symbol featuring a '2' inside a Poké Ball, allowing players to continue building decks using familiar mechanics and card lists.
The card's design features the artwork of Keiji Kinebuchi, whose style is recognized throughout early Pokémon TCG expansions for its distinctive 3D-modeled aesthetic. As an uncommon Trainer card, Defender was intended to provide a tactical edge in gameplay, allowing a player to attach it to their active Pokémon to reduce incoming damage. Its inclusion in Base Set 2 helped standardize the accessibility of utility cards that were essential for the shifting competitive landscape of the time.
