Where it came from
The Super Energy Removal card was originally released as part of the initial Pokémon Trading Card Game launch in 1999, with the Base Set 2 version arriving in 2000 as a reprint set designed to keep the most popular original cards in circulation for newer players. It was a staple of the early competitive meta, functioning as a high-stakes resource denial tool that forced opponents to discard two energy cards from one of their active Pokémon, effectively stalling aggressive decks.
The illustration was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. His work during this era emphasized a clean, minimalist style that defined the aesthetic of the early sets. While the card is a functional reprint, collectors often distinguish the Base Set 2 version by the distinctive circular set symbol and the updated copyright information on the bottom edge, marking it as a piece of the transition between the initial craze and the expanded TCG landscape.
