Where it came from
Released in the Fossil expansion in 1999, Ditto was designed to capture the unique identity-shifting nature of the Pokémon. As the third expansion in the English Pokémon Trading Card Game, the Fossil set was produced by Wizards of the Coast to capitalize on the massive global popularity of the franchise, focusing on 'prehistoric' Pokémon and those introduced in the later parts of the original Kanto region Pokédex.
The card features artwork by Kagemaru Himeno, who was a pivotal illustrator for the early Pokémon TCG. Her approach often emphasized the personality and specific characteristics of the creatures. For Ditto, the design focused on its amorphous, purple, gelatinous form, reflecting its 'Transform' ability which defined the card's mechanics. The holo-rare status made it a highly sought-after piece during the late 90s collecting craze, marking a distinct point in the game's history where gameplay mechanics began to reflect complex creature behaviors.
