Provenance

Where it came from

The Electrode card was released as part of the Jungle expansion in 1999, which served as the first major set following the original Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Designed to expand the roster of available creatures, the set introduced many evolved forms that were popular in the concurrent Game Boy titles. The art direction for this set continued the aesthetic established by Ken Sugimori and his team, focusing on dynamic poses that captured the distinct elemental powers of each Pokémon.

The illustration for this specific card was created by Keiji Kinebuchi, a frequent artist for the early Wizards of the Coast era. Kinebuchi utilized a distinctive, textured background style that became a hallmark of the early Jungle and Fossil sets, aiming to give the holographic cards a sense of depth and energy. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its 'Buzzap' Pokémon Power, which allowed it to provide energy at the cost of being knocked out, solidifying its place in the early competitive meta.
