Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1999 as part of the Jungle expansion, the first major expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, this card features the Normal-type Pokémon Kangaskhan. The set was designed to introduce new pocket monsters beyond the initial Base Set, capitalizing on the immense global popularity of the Nintendo Game Boy titles. Its inclusion in the set provided players with a sturdy colorless-type option that could accommodate a wide variety of deck strategies.

The artwork was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for the early sets focused on clean, definitive lines and a direct depiction of the creature in its natural environment, aiming to establish a consistent visual language for the burgeoning franchise. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players for its ability to draw cards and absorb damage, becoming a staple of late-90s competitive play.
