Energy Removal 2 was released in the 2002 Expedition Base Set, which marked a significant transition for the Pokémon Trading Card Game as it was the first set produced by The Pokémon Company International after Wizards of the Coast shifted the design philosophy. This card was designed as a strategic follow-up to the original Energy Removal card, featuring a coin-flip mechanic to balance its powerful effect of discarding an Energy card from an opponent's active Pokémon. The move toward these types of mechanics was part of a broader effort to introduce the e-Reader compatibility, allowing players to scan the dot-code on the bottom of the card for additional digital content.
