Where it came from
Eternatus VMAX (117/189) was released in the 2020 expansion set Darkness Ablaze, marking a significant moment in the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Sword & Shield series. The card features the Legendary Pokémon Eternatus in its Gigantamax form, a mechanic introduced in the eighth generation of the video games that sees Pokémon undergo massive size and power shifts. The art style emphasizes the alien, skeletal nature of the creature, reflecting its role as the source of the Galar region's Dynamax energy.
The illustration was handled by a member of the Pokémon creature design team, capturing the imposing, cosmic aesthetic that defines Eternatus. Within the competitive landscape of the time, the card was highly regarded for its 'Eternal Zone' ability, which allowed players to expand their bench size, fundamentally shifting the meta-game strategies of the period. It remains a hallmark of the era for both its strategic utility and its dramatic visual interpretation of a modern Legendary Pokémon.
